ABS trouble with my 1998 Subaru Outback car
It senses the rotation of your wheels and sends the proper amount of fluid to each wheel so they do not skid one tire or another when you jam on the brakes. It tries to send equal pressure to all wheels. First check all fuses as you can actually disengage the unit by pulling a fuse. Usually the one with the cruise control. Has that quit working too, or any thing else quit working. That will give you a clue if it is a fuse or not. Also there is a sensor at each wheel. Expensive unless you get one at the junk yard. They have a metal protrusion that almost touches the wheel. As the wheel rotates the wheel having metal ribs on it comes almost in contact with the sensor protrusion. Each time it almost comes in contact it sends a pulse to the abs unit. If the protrusion gets broke off by road hazards, such as you can get on a gravel road, a small rock gets kicked up to it and gets between it and the wheel rib and breaks it. I know i live on a dirt road and my car had it happen. The sensor is works identical to a guitar pickup that is under the strings of an electric guitar. Anyhow a quick check at each wheel, will determine if the sensors are damaged or not. They should all look the same. They are usually held in place with one bolt and have a cable of 6-12 inches in length with a connector at the end. They are mounted in such a way as to only see the mounted side and not the protrusion. Easy as 1,2,3 you can take the one bolt out and inspect if you know what you are looking for.
